With generous assistance from Forsa, Electricaid, Combined Services Third World Fund and the INTO we have been able to replace the ramshackle structure in Rogballan Madina village, Sierra Leone with a fine new school block. Together with the original SHF block the number of classrooms has been doubled.
SHF has funded a programme where gardens are cultivated in the schools. This provides training in cultivation and also a small source of nutritious food.
Maize and garden eggs were grown in Rothana and Katick. The maize has been harvested and they are now engaged in the second cropping of yellow maize and other seeds received from SHF. Seeds received from SHF are yellow maize, water melon, cucumber, okra and sweet pepper.
In less than 4 years attendance at our school in Rogballan Madina, Sierra Leone has increased from 165 to 262. In response we have funded the construction of a new three-classroom block.
A beautiful river flows past Katick village in Sierra Leone, home to an SHF school. However, this becomes a raging torrent during the rainy season and it is frightening for the children who must cross it to attend school in Katick.
After an appeal from parents SHF funded a large boat to enable the pupils attend school in safety.
It was launched last week after a very happy ceremony.
Again this year we have funded scholarships for students in our schools to attend secondary. Over 100 children were given this opportunity - at a cost of €8500,
It was heartening to see that the students received copies of our leaflets on Child Brides and Female Genital Mutilation as part of their kits.
